Since the age of papyrus scrolls, humanity has written about cancer and its impact on our lives. Thousands of years later, those voices have built an extraordinary body of knowledge and experience to pass on. We can’t name them all, but below here are a few of our favorites at C3.

“The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer” by Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD

Explore cancer’s history and scientific background through the stories of the humans fighting against it. We love the sprawling, nearly-biographical narrative and recommend for all clients and their families.

“Comprehensive Guide to Supportive and Palliative Care for Patients with Cancer” by Janet Abrahm, MD

Take a practical approach to treatment and palliative care with this comprehensive resource written by leading physicians. We value its direct, compassionate perspective and recommend this for clients in the HS Nav Program.

“Drugs and the FDA: Safety, Efficacy, and the Public's Trust” by Mikkael A. Sekeres, MD

Gain insight on the FDA drug approval process in modern medicine through a historical and social health perspective. We appreciate the highlighting of a very relevant FDA drug approval hearing and recommend for clients in the CT101 Program.

“When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi, MD

A poignant memoir by a neurosurgeon facing an untimely diagnosis reflects on mortality and what makes life worth living. Though our focus is often practical, the philosophical perspectives explored here are vital for all cancer patients.

“Dancing in Limbo: Making Sense of Life After Cancer” by Glenna Halvorson-Boyd and Lisa K. Hunter

An honest exploration of the uncertain emotional and practical terrain survivors face after cancer treatment ends, offering insight into rebuilding life and identity. Today we may focus on treatment, but there are new challenges awaiting tomorrow.

“Beyond Surviving: Cancer and Your Spiritual Journey” by David Maginley

A compassionate guide that integrates personal experience and spiritual reflection to help cancer patients and families find purpose, connection, and peace beyond the diagnosis. When we’ve reached the limits of medicine, spirituality can be a powerful tool.
